Designing a Gold Stage for Doja Cat’s Iconic Performances

LA Set Construction was honored to collaborate with Doja Cat’s team to design and build a custom stage for her live performances of “Need to Know,” “Love to Dream,” and “Ain’t Shit.” The concept for this project was ambitious and “otherworldly,” set in the middle of the desert to reflect Doja Cat’s vibrant, creative personality. This outdoor setting not only emphasized her unique artistic vision but also leveraged the natural beauty of the canyon landscape outside Los Angeles as a breathtaking backdrop.

Making the Gold: Durable and Beautiful Stage Design

Our team constructed a 48-foot gold stage with a stairway, designed to withstand the demands of Doja Cat’s dynamic performance. The stage was built using a combination of plywood and steel deck. The steel deck provided robust structural support, ensuring the platform could endure heavy use, including the high-energy dance routines performed during the shoot.

To enhance the stage’s aesthetic appeal and durability, we applied gold marlite, a fiberglass-reinforced panel that gave the surface a flawless, glossy finish. The marlite’s hard material composition made the stage resistant to wear and tear, ensuring it remained in top condition throughout the production.

Reinforcements for Outdoor Stability

Given the outdoor location in the desert canyon, additional reinforcements were essential to secure the stage against high winds and environmental elements. Our team ensured that the entire structure was carefully anchored, preventing any movement or instability during filming. The design took into account both safety and visual impact, balancing structural integrity with artistic appeal.

The Impact of Outdoor Filming

The choice of an outdoor location added a distinct visual appeal to the production. The interplay between natural light, environmental elements, and the golden stage created a captivating, organic backdrop that would have been difficult to replicate in a studio.

Throughout the shoot, the changing natural light—from the warm glow of golden hour to the dramatic shadows cast by the canyon—enhanced the depth and mood of the visuals. This dynamic environment emphasized the energy and joy of Doja Cat’s performance, making the final product immersive and engaging.

Conclusion

This project for Doja Cat’s music video highlights LA Set Construction’s ability to combine artistry, durability, and practicality in complex outdoor settings. From the custom-built gold stage to the strategic reinforcements that ensured stability, every aspect of the design was tailored to meet the unique demands of the project. Our attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality staging solutions made this production a success.
