Crafting Intricate Bass Fish Props for a Unique Outdoor Experience

LA Set Construction had the privilege of collaborating with Progressive Insurance to create highly detailed bass fish props for a photo op event in Chicago, Illinois. These props, designed with saddles for public interaction, were a centerpiece of Progressive’s outdoor experience, aimed at engaging the public and showcasing their innovative approach to branding.

The bass fish, chosen to represent the Chicago River’s iconic species, were crafted to be both realistic and durable, allowing the public to interact with them up close. This project exemplifies LA Set Construction’s ability to combine creative design with practical functionality, delivering exceptional results for our clients.

Bringing the Bass Fish to Life

From Vision to Reality

The design process focused on capturing the intricate details of real bass fish, including their fins, scales, and lifelike coloring. Additionally, the props featured waves at their base, symbolizing water and creating a cohesive aesthetic for the installation.

  • Cutting Tools: For precise shaping
  • Metal Tubes: To support the sitting section
  • Hard Coat: To ensure durability

Fabrication Process

  1. Cutting the Foam
Using hot wire cutters and utility knives, our team sculpted the foam blocks into the shape of the bass, including features such as the fins, mouth, gills, and waves at the base.
  2. Detail Sculpting
Sculpting tools were used to refine the shapes and add textures, ensuring realistic details like the fins and eyes were carefully defined.
  3. Metal Support
Given the interactive nature of the props, metal tubes were integrated into the design to reinforce the sitting section and enhance the durability of the fish.
  4. Hard Coating
A layer of hard coat was applied to the foam to protect it from impact and wear, ensuring the props could withstand high traffic during the event.

Painting Techniques

The painting process was a meticulous endeavor aimed at achieving lifelike realism:

  • Primer Application: Prepared the surface for painting.
  • Base Coat: A silvery white base coat laid the foundation.
  • Hand-Painted Details:
    • Scales: Individually painted in varying sizes and shapes.
    • Fins: Detailed with circular patterns, shadows, and highlights.
    • Green Hue: Applied with precision using our airless paint system, enhanced by shadows and yellow highlights for depth.
  • Waves: Painted blue with additional highlights and shadows to mimic water.
  • Final Touches: Pink was added inside the gills to replicate the natural coloring of a bass.

Sealing and Final Approval

After completing the painting process, the bass fish props were sealed with a clear coat, protecting the vibrant colors and providing a polished, professional finish. Once the final product was presented to our client, they were thrilled with the exceptional detail and craftsmanship, praising the props as a perfect match for their vision.

This project for Progressive Insurance highlights LA Set Construction’s expertise in creating realistic and interactive props.
